Today marks the 20th Anniversary of my father's death. In some ways, I still cannot believe it--he died so suddenly and left such a big, empty place in our lives. As sad as we are without him, I know this day--June 26, 1989--was the happiest day of his life. He wanted nothing more than to be with Jesus.

I had planned on writing a few words in memory of him (so easy to write pages and pages--I loved him dearly), and then I was contacted by one of his best former researchers at Christian Research Institute, Kenneth Samples, about something he'd just written and it was so eloquent--and so touching--I knew I couldn't do any better.

Thank you, Ken.

In Memory of Walter Martin (1928-1989): The Original Bible Answer Man, Part 1 (of 3)

Have you ever had a Jehovah's Witness knock at your door? Perhaps it's just me, but they always seem to come to my house at the most inconvenient times.

The first story I ever heard about Walter Martin involved turning the tables on the Jehovah's Witnesses. The story is that Martin, a native of New York City, went to the headquarters of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society located in Brooklyn. He knocked on their front door and began witnessing to them about the Jesus Christ of historic Christianity. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Martin had what my Jewish friends call "chutzpah." I had the distinct privilege of working with and for him at the countercult organization he founded, Christian Research Institute, in the late 1980s.

In light of the 20th anniversary of Martin's death (June 26), I'd like to share six things I learned from his example as a gifted and accomplished Christian apologist. These lessons have been enormously helpful in my own trek through the challenging Christian apologetics enterprise.

1. Rhetorical Eloquence

Like one of his favorite politicians, President Ronald Reagan, Martin was a great communicator. He mastered the media venues of radio and television in order to convey the Christian message with clarity, intelligence, and force. Martin was one of the finest public speakers I have ever heard. Amazingly, he could speak extemporaneously and nevertheless speak in complete, grammatically correct sentences. He was always a very hard act to follow.

While few can match Martin's gift and skill of rhetorical eloquence, his example challenged me to concentrate on speaking in a clear, concise, cogent, and compelling manner. I call this the "four C's of communication." I encourage would-be apologists to work at sharpening their rhetorical skills. As Martin proved, eloquent speaking is a powerful vehicle in persuading people of the truth of the gospel.

2. Courage Under Fire

Courage is the classic virtue I admire most. That's probably why I greatly admire noble warriors. Courage is a rare trait both in the Christian church and outside of it. But Martin exhibited a great deal of courage in his apologetics ministry. He wasn't afraid to take a tough stand on a controversial issue and live with the repercussions.

Some people vigorously criticized Martin when he asserted that Seventh-day Adventism and Roman Catholicism shouldn't be categorized as non-Christian cults. For the record, Martin did not give either church body a clean bill of theological health and criticized both belief systems. Martin did his homework and was willing to absorb criticism from all sides.

As one of his research assistants, I adopted and defended Martin's views on Adventism and Catholicism. Accordingly, some of Martin's critics also publicly criticized my positions. While it's never easy for a Christian apologist to enter into the arena and take the heat, aspiring apologists need to know that facing criticism comes with the apologetic territory.

Though he has a different temperament and labors in a different part of the apologetic vineyard, Hugh Ross exhibits Martin-like courage in defending old-Earth creationism. Yet Martin himself affirmed old-Earth creationism long before it gained popular support.

In part two of this article I will discuss two more apologetic lessons that I learned from my former boss and apologetics mentor, Walter Ralston Martin.

At my father's memorial service, we played a song sung by Glen Campbell called, No More Night. I've never been able to listen to it since that day, but I love to read the words:

The timeless theme
Earth and heaven will pass away
It's not a dream
God will make all things new that day
Gone is the curse
From which I stumbled and fell
Evil is banished to eternal hell

No more night
No more pain
No more tears
Never crying again
And praises to the great I Am
We will live in the light of the risen Lamb

See over there

There's a mansion prepared for me
Where we will live with my Savior eternally...

No more night

No more pain
No more tears
Never crying again
And praises to the great I Am
We will live in the light of the risen Lamb*

John 14:2-3

"In My Father's house are many mansions ; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."

I'm 20 years old and recently introduced to Mr. Martin through the 'Kingdom of the Cults,' the most cogent and erudite confutation to non-Christian cults in print. Although his scholarly acumen is certainly evident, I am most impressed by his Christian humility while dealing with these pernicious anti-Christian movements.

Back in 1984 I came to the Lord listening to Walter Martin on the radio. What caused me to see that I needed salvation through Jesus Christ was Walter’s consistency in answering other people’s questions on the Bible Answer Man show. I could see as he shared with others that archeology concerning the Bible supported the Bible while consistently clearing up discrepancies and contradictions, I accepted the prophetic record and accuracy of the Bible that Walter shared, and I believed what Walter said about the best moral standard to live by came out of the Bible. Because, if what Walter said was true, I was in trouble! I wasn’t going to church nor did I have a Christian outlook on life at that time, but I believed that each religion had its own viable destination, whatever it was. God used Walter to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with me by way of answering other people’s questions. I am forever grateful to God for using such a faithful, caring and God fearing man as Walter Martin who dedicated his life to reaching the lost. Today many people don’t know who Walter Martin is and I get the privilege of sharing who he was and how God affected my life through Walter.

Like Spurgeon, Edwards, Augustine, and Paul, Dr.Martin was a willing instrument in the hands of his God. I thank our great God and Savior Jesus Christ for the ministry of Dr. Martin.

When you consider the other person who uses that title...perhaps we should Call our departed brother..."The ONLY Bible Answer Man"...When I was young in the faith, much of my bible instruction came from the myriad of Walter Martin tapes that I purchased at my local Christian Bookstore..Thank you for keeping His ministry alive and available...Dorian

I have been thinking of my time at CRI near the end of the 1980's. Even today I miss and think about and remember Dr. Martin. I have been very ill and ask for your prayers. It is wonderful to read all of the things written about Dr. Martin and to see that his words are continuing to bless people and to bring them to the Lord. I know he was ready to go when his time came. We all had such a blessed time with him at CRI whether it was for a short or a long time. His nickname for me was Capt. Cautious. I loved him as a brother and still do.

Jill,

I listened to the audio broadcast of Ken's tribute to your beloved dad. I spoke to Ken when he visited a local church with Reasons To Believe about 1.5 years ago. While speaking to Ken, we discovered that my wife and I were in Walter's Melodyland Bible class during the same time frame as Ken. We had a wonderful time remembering those special times. Your father's ministry had the most profound impact of anyone upon all of our lives. The strong theological and apologetic foundation that God formed in us through your dad has made such a difference in our lives. I know that countless others across the globe feel the same way (as evidenced by our brother from Thailand). Walter left an indelible and unique mark on Christendom in general, and upon our lives specifically. I praise and thank our Lord Jesus for the warrior for Christ that is Walter Martin and for you, Jill, in keeping this great work going forward.

Jill, I just want you to know that Dr. Martin's teaching on the New Age Movement, Transcindental Meditation, and Zen Buddhism was what God used to SAVE my father in his last few months of life. I was introduced to Dr. Martin's teaching in college (1992) when a friend passed a few of his teaching tapes to me. I was entrhalled immediately...and have been until this day. I never knew why I had such a fascination with his teaching until now...when God used me to pass on the teachings to my father. He had been paralyzed from the neck down by a horseback riding accident, had lived 1 1/2 years that way, and I had been sharing the Lord with him as much as he would let me. My dad had been so embedded in the New Age Movement, including meditation, Hinduism, and Buddhism. My father listened to Dr. Martins teachings on these subjects over and over again. God removed the scales from his eyes and he was born again!! Once he was baptized in church and gave his personal testimony, it was not a month later that he died. God is GOOD and He saves souls STILL with Dr. Martin's teachings. Thank God for Dr. Martin!! I am so grateful to your dad!! He helped save my dad!! :)

Sincerely, Suzanne Shirley
